erinptah: (daily show)

The latest season is on Netflix now, so it's time for me to work through more of this incredibly watchable show about terrible people.

For those who need a brief refresher:

Do you like The West Wing? Do you like Leverage? Would you like a series that's cross between those two shows? How about a series that thinks it's a cross between those two shows, but missed the memo that a big part of the appeal was the main characters being likeable, competent, and out to do good things? Well, Scandal is that last one.

Our heroine is Olivia Pope, a freelance fixer of political problems with a reputation for being supercompetent, brilliant, and heroic. Before canon started, she had already helped rig the US Presidential election to put her (Republican) (also married) boyfriend into office. The first few episodes follow a mini-arc where she is asked to defend the reputation of a woman who also had an affair with said President. Olivia yells at this woman for being a lying liar. Olivia is proved wrong.

This sets the stage for a pattern where, halfway through any given case-of-the-week, whoever Olivia is defending will turn out to be evil, and whoever she just shot down will be revealed as the true victim. She is aided by a motley crew of employees and allies, some of whom are already terrible people when the show starts, others of whom compromise their morals over the course of the series. They've covered everything from war crimes to murder to perjury to torture.

An illuminating example: One of the employees (Abby) idolizes Olivia for rescuing her from an abusive husband -- now if only it stopped there. Later, Abby and a much-nicer love interest (David, also a legal ally of Olivia's) come perilously close to uncovering Olivia's Presidential-election-rigging. To get them off the trail...Olivia plants information that triggers Abby's abuse-trauma, manipulating her into a panicky and tearful breakup. Neither Abby nor David finds out Olivia orchestrated this! Both of them continue to idolize and adore her! The writers still seem to think we should too!

At the end of season 5, there were maybe 2 characters that were likeable human beings. Senator-turned-VP Susan Ross, who pleasantly surprised me by flat-out quitting her job rather than sell her soul, and governor-turned-Dem-candidate Francisco Vargas, whose soul is still up for grabs.

Liveblogged the first episode. Might end up doing the same for the whole season, depending on how commentable it is.

Onward!

Season 6 opens on the night of a presidential election, and it all comes down to...California. That's right, folks, in the Scandal universe, California is a swing state.

Also, Olivia is chastising her staff to vote if they haven't already. I mean, hey, just because they're reporting totals on the west coast, that doesn't mean the polls can't still be open! Our competent political-genius heroine in action, folks.

Frankie won. So now Olivia is berating her candidate (Mellie, also her boyfriend's ex) to call and concede, which seems like the smart and reasonable move. Knowing this show, that means we will eventually learn it totally the wrong move.

(I like Mellie and Olivia being friends. For all that they're awful, their fighting with each other was pretty evenly matched -- not one abusing the other, they both gave as good as they got. And it all stemmed from their rivalry over Fitz, who is painfully not worth it.)

Dammit, they shot Frankie. He might escape becoming awful by dying.

Obnoxious agent: "Ma'am, I'm sure you have some security clearance..." Abby: "No. I don't have some security clearance. I have all of it."

Hits all the beats and all the right emotions of a badass smackdown scene. Logically, undercut by the fact that Abby didn't show any security clearance. If you're going to waltz into a hyper-secure operation (the hospital) and start barking orders, have your badge in hand! (Also, her entire order was literally "don't let anyone in here," which I'm pretty sure they were already doing.)

...yep, they killed Frankie.

Olivia yells at her father (ex-leader of the government's Evil Secret Black Ops Division): was he behind the killing? Well, we're 22 minutes in and she's yelling at him, so I bet not.

Mellie just wants to go on vacation and leave this all behind. Now that would be the smart and reasonable move. (She never really wanted the job in the first place. She wants power in the abstract, but has no interest in doing anything in particular with it. Five minutes later she'll forget all her reasonable plans and decide she wants it again.)

Now Olivia's convinced it was Cyrus (part of the Fitz conspiracy, now VP candidate for Vargas) who had the candidate murdered so he'd be promoted to the top of the winning ticket. But we're only 27 minutes in, so she's probably wrong. After all, the Electoral College hasn't voted yet, so Cyrus would be taking a pretty steep gamble on them not abandoning the Vargas-Cyrus ticket even with half of it gone.

Olivia storms into the hospital. The same hyper-secure hospital that nobody was supposed to be let in. And finds Cyrus in mute, trembling shock. Who could've seen that coming?

Fitz: "I wanted you to be right. You're always right." Dude...have you never seen this show?

He ultimately supports the EC supporting Cyrus, which is the right choice as far as the will of the people is concerned, although both he and Mellie are impressively awful choices who should not be trusted with this country.

Vargas' widow is still in the hospital after a sleepless night, still covered in blood from standing next to the shooting, but for some reason her hair and makeup is still flawless. D- for realism, makeup department.

...So the last five minutes unveil a tip from a mystery person that it was Cyrus (no details on how the tipper came to this conclusion). Well, now that this twist has been un-twisted and re-twisted again, I'm sure the issue is settled, and will be quite shocked if the rest of the season isn't completely straightforward.

I had to go get this icon out of my LJ icon folder... Games!

I woke up earlier than I wanted to and, unable to fall back to sleep, I went ahead and took a run at the end of Suikoden, since I was pretty close. \o/ I did get all 108 Stars, so I did get that amazing end~~ ♥ Now that I'm twenty years late to the party, it's time to look for fic?

I don't feel quite as attached to everyone as I did in SuikoIV, but that's understandable. I mostly used Flik, Viktor, Tir, Pahn, Cleo, Gremio, Kirkus, um... Kasumi for awhile, Rubi at the end, with a few others sprinkled in here and there. A very physical team. I never used Soul Eater until the final battle.

I love Gremio so much. And I want to go replay SuikoIV for Ted. ^^;; Though I'll be good and do II next, when the guide shows up.

I want piles of Gremio/Tir everywhere, and however the universe wants to give me Flik/Viktor. Hmm... who else? A lot of the canon couples were really cute - Hix & Tengaar, Lepant & Eileen, Kirkus & Sylvana, etc.

I would give a lot of money for a shiny remake of this game with about twice the character stuff, some loose ends tied up, etc. (Well, some may get tied up in SuikoII?)

Gah, I'm so happy~~

It's been hot the past few days, so if I hadn't needed to do anything during that time, I didn't do it. If I was in, I just read or caught up on TV and was hot. As was Missy - hamsters don't do well if it's too hot and they don't like the humidity either. But she's enjoyed frozen peas and frozen carrots and she's been outside. Because it's been so hot I've had the back door open while she's out playing, so of course she went out onto the doorstep and then fell off. After a few times falling off she was happy about where she was and tried to wander off. At one point she found a pebble and decided she wanted it.

Monday I had one of my (on average) two days a year when I wished my car had air conditioning. I did some stargazing from my back door, where I was sat because it was cooler and I could keep an eye on Missy escaping. Not that I could see many stars because even by the time I went to bed late it still wasn't properly dark.

Now, though, the weather is much better, I have a couple of days off work and I am catching up on things.

Tennis is crazy. Queens sometimes has those years when all the seeds go out in the first couple of rounds, so we were probably overdue one. But I feel like the third, second and first seeds all going out one after the other must be some sort of record. And a whole load withdrew due to injuries. But it'll be interesting to get a winner outside of the usual suspects - although a few former champions are still in the draw.

Unconventional Courtship is on again. I spent some time at the weekend with the Generator and ended up signing up with this summary:
310) Night of the Living Wed by Michele Hauf
Dayna Mellanby and Del Tarrant's evening turns deadly when some uninvited guests show up at their friend's party — a horde of hungry zombies. The couple is in a fight for their lives when a new, heroic side of Tarrant emerges, and he vows to protect Dayna no matter the cost….

Obviously explosions will follow. I will probably change the zombies, but I went with this one because it was just so perfect for them. And will be different to what I've written for it before.

zarla: locke is sad (locke:()
Just sort of a brief update, but since Monday I've been at my brother's place since the house is getting fumigated (not because of the bees, because of an older different problem) and I'll be able to go back sometime Thursday afternoon. Everything living had to be taken out of the house, so I've got Nana's plant and Splotchy with me and such, but also any kind of food or medicine has to be double-bagged with an airtight seal, otherwise the poison will get absorbed by the food and will kill you if you eat it later. Everything looked bagged up properly when I left but I'm getting increasingly anxious about the possibility of a bag not being completely sealed, and something getting poisoned. I really really don't want to die because something wasn't bagged properly, and whenever I think about it I get extremely anxious. There's not much I can do about it right now, I tell myself, so there's no point in freaking out about it, but I'm worried. I'd almost rather just toss everything I didn't take with me not to take that chance... I mean, when it comes down to it, what's more valuable, food or your life? I'm hoping I'm worrying over nothing and everything will be fine though...

Anyway, I'd blame that for not getting anything done over here, but Alex brought over his Switch and I've been playing Breath of the Wild, which has been very distracting thankfully. I'm trying to get as much time in it as I can before I head back home and he takes it back. There's just so much to see though! I know I haven't even scratched the surface of all the stuff in the game yet. But it definitely does help keep your mind off of frightening things. Well, things I'm currently frightened of, anyway.

The bad:

Roundup of incidents of Trump supporters being proudly violent, sometimes to the point of murder, in his name. Features racism, sexism, homophobia, Islamophobia, the whole hatred spectrum.

Trump wants to start charging stores to accept food stamps, because apparently Republicans want to help small businesses by driving away their customers.

The Leopards Eating Faces Party constituents:

"'I really haven't seen him doing anything' on jobs, Olsen said. 'The longer they stall around and dance around and whatever, the more people are gonna get hurt.'" GEE, YA THINK.

"Mike Catanzaro, a solar panel installer with a high school diploma, likes to work with his hands under the clear Carolina sky. That’s why he supported President Trump, a defender of blue-collar workers. But the 25-year-old sees Trump’s withdrawal from the Paris climate agreement as a threat to his job."

"Trump supporters in Texas are coming to the realization that their vote for the president may force some of them out of their homes for less than they are worth, with others finding out that — if they stay — they’ll be living in Mexico if his wall is built."

One coping mechanism: “I didn’t want to be depressed. I don’t want to feel that he’s not doing what he said, so I just choose to not listen.

The good:

"My neighbor and I drove home in silence. I wondered if his being amongst Middle Easterners who wore hijab and spoke in their native tongue reaffirmed his anti-immigration stance. As we were parting, he said, 'Let me know if you need help with more deliveries. I’m happy to help anytime.' He had tears in his eyes."

Not everyone in this mindset is stuck there forever. Some people can learn, and grow, and change.

Sega wants to turn its classic catalogue into 'the Netflix of retro gaming'

Sega exited the video game console business nearly 20 years ago, but the company still retains some of the industry’s most iconic characters and beloved classic catalogs. That explains why Sega decided to put resources toward an all-new initiative it’s calling Sega Forever. Announced earlier this morning, Sega Forever is the new banner with which the publisher will reissue games from its backlog on iOS and Android, starting with five titles to be released tomorrow in the US. A new title every two weeks after that, and every game will start out free, with players having the option to turn off advertising forever with a $1.99 in-app purchase.

The first five Sega Forever games are Genesis titles: Sonic the Hedgehog, Comix Zone, Altered Beast, Kid Chameleon, and Phantasy Star II. But Sega doesn’t want to stop there. “I’ve got two decades worth of classic gaming content,” says Mike Evans, Sega’s chief marketing officer and development lead on Sega Forever. “Everything as far back as the SG 1000 Mark I through to Master System, Game Gear, Genesis, Saturn, and Dreamcast.”

I probably have Phantasy Star II in two or three different formats already, and yet my immediate thought was 'OH I NEED TO BUY PHANTASY STAR II'. I'll definitely be keeping an eye on this and will probably end up jamming my tablet with Sega goodness. Especially when they get to Saturn stuff, since that's the generation I really missed and picking up back-catalogue Saturn stuff has been really difficult. I really only have about a dozen games for the system and that's including imports.

Things you don't normally expect to deal with when you have Raynauds? Heat rash.

My body is trolling me. On the plus side, my usual collection of poor circulation aches and pains are non-existent right now. And of the two things, heat rash is so very much easier to treat.

Sadly for me the temperature is due to drop tonight. Kheldar is likely to be unhappy about this too but at least we got a glorious few days of hot summer sunshine. It's due to rain as well and the garden will be very glad of that.

ETA: Kheldar just arrived and rubbed his very wet head around my legs. Normally this indicates that it is raining outside. It is not raining outside. Only the front half of the cat is wet. He has clearly Had An Adventure.

One other advantage of the current burst of hot weather is that I've been more willing to get out and about for a stroll at lunch time and since it's hot and dry rather than hot and rainy that means more Pokémon hunting. I've found a couple more new-to-me Pokémon in the last week one of which was a result of the current Solstice event and one of which was a happy random find after walking round the back of my work building and setting off to explore the small green area that I could see from the window of one of the classrooms.

There seems to have been a change in local spawning locations as well, which has made the walk into work slightly less predictable than it has been... and it looks like one of the Pokéstops in Cabot Circuit is about to become a gym. Which may encourage me to participate in the gym end of the game a little bit more since it's under cover and can therefore be battled over even when it's raining.

Kheldar cares about none of this and continues to attempt some form of patrol duty even in the heat. It's funny when there's a breeze because his tail perks up and then the rest of the cat perks up and he positively bounces off into the garden. He seems to be mostly enjoying the weather now despite that fur coat of his. The balcony door is open most of the time which means that he can sit in the shade of the doorway and sniff at his garden without having to exert any effort at all.

As ever, feel free to skip the commentary and just enjoy the pictures.

I was lucky enough to be in Torbay again so I committed June challenge flan III(d) first right/second left from the front door of my B&B, and then from the same starting point tried first left/second right. I shall claim I did both out of thoroughness and not because after seven years I still can't remember which way around it's officially supposed to go, lol.

1. First right down the residential street brought me to a six or seven way road junction, which consequently resulted in two choices of second left depending on whether I relied on my visual judgment or the topographical map. Both routes took me past Torre Abbey, pronounced Torr, which was an influential local medieval Abbey then a private house and is now a museum.

1 Torre Abbey, Torbay, Devon 06-17

1a. I then turned second left along the seafront, which I followed for nearly one kilometre until the first opportunity to turn right led me out along the pier and breakwater. There was no second left so I sat on the end of the pier to enjoy the sunset.

2 Sunset from Princess Pier, 1890, Torquay, Devon 06-17

I have done all the social things. All of them. And it was fun. But I really need to hide for a bit now.

Yesterday evening I went to the theatre for the first time in... maybe a decade? We met up for dinner first and then we saw Kirk vs Ming, which was silly, ridiculous, loved it's source material, and poked at some of the problems with said source material in a comedy-making-a-point kind of way. The less said about what Ming wears under his robes the better ;)

Today I've spent time at [personal profile] keziath's place sorting through larp kit and briefly met one of her new cats, who was thoroughly offended to find a strange human in the living room. Then I got to go to an epic BBQ where I caught up with friends old and new, had some fantastic veggie food, and was briefly warm enough for all my background aches to go away.

We came home to find Special Agent Kheldar on guard. He's clearly had a tiring day as well because having carefully checked that both of his humans were now present and correct he promptly sprawled out at the bottom of the bed and went to sleep. I'm not quite sure where I'm supposed to sleep since he's right where my feet should be...

There are still some bees lingering around, but not nearly as many as there were. I can handle a few buzzing around every now and then, hopefully the stragglers will leave eventually. At night the lightbulbs draw them out of the ceiling which is kind of annoying, I used a candle for one night but then that drew one over to me and that was too close for me, so now I'm trying to ignore them. They make it very hard to focus though, I get nervous about every small movement in my peripheral vision or muscle twinge.

Undertale's coming to the Playstation! Which is interesting to me in a few ways, like I wonder if anything'll be changed in terms of... unique gameplay, let's say, and there's a mention of trophies (i REALLY hope the trophies aren't route related, since that'd defeat the whole point to me), but I'm more interested in the Collector's Edition, which will have a cool musical locket which LOOKS SO NEAT.
The other major thing about it is that Undertale's going to have an official Japanese translation now! Which I'm sure people will pick apart the minute it gets released which I'm excited about, but the real hilarious thing so far is that the Japanese fandom is having a cow over the pronoun Sans uses. Everything about this is delightful to me.

Anyway, I dunno how much typing I feel like doing today, but I'll see if I can at least do a bit of a writeup for two handplates comics. Something kind of quick, at least. If they're scrunched, you can look at them on dreamwidth or right click-view image on them. Spoiler warning!

Well, hopefully. )

Do you have  a Democratic Senator? Want to save lives (possibly even your own) and help kill Trumpcare? The Indivisible Group has a plan. But we need to light a fire under the Democrats who still keep trying to play nice with the GOP.

The plan - the GOP has chosen to repeal healthcare in secret without any hearings or debate. But the simple majority vote (reconciliation) method allows the Democrats to force a debate by adding amendments. Thousands of them. Each one will have to be read into the record - which will give the US citizens more time to read and understand what is in the healthcare repeal bill and how it will hurt them. Otherwise, the GOP plans to repeal healthcare - without any debates or hearings - by July 4 in time for them to go home for vacation.

OK so what do I do?

You can use resist-bot to text-fax a message: https://resistbot.io/

Or call your  Senator.: http://whoismyrepresentative.com/

O
K what do I say?

This link offers a script: https://www.indivisibleguide.com/resource/withholding-consent-filibuster-amendment-call-script/

Except from the Indivisible website:

“Do you have a Democratic Senator? Then it means they’ve publicly committed to voting against TrumpCare. That’s great—but it’s not nearly good enough. This is a do-or-die moment on the ACA and your Democratic Senator should be doing everything they can to stop this bill from getting through the Senate. Here’s how they can really play hardball to defeat TrumpCare.

REPUBLICANS WILL STOP AT NOTHING TO GET TRUMPCARE THROUGH.

They’re using a strategy of speed and secrecy to pass TrumpCare in the Senate. No hearings, no town halls, and no CBO score. And they definitely aren’t letting anyone read the bill. We need to slow them way down and draw attention to their terrible bill and their terrible process. That way, everyone will know how many people will lose coverage, how many protections will be taken away, and how much premiums are expected to increase.

DEMOCRATS AREN’T IN CONTROL, BUT THEY CAN STILL RESIST.
1. Withhold Consent. 2. Filibuster by Amendment.
