3.12 Mina de Malfois and the End of Summer (part two)

This, sadly, will be the last update, or at least the last-for-a-longish-time time. Well: that's not quite accurate. I have a lot of edge-filling to do for season three--one-shot stuff to be added. And since I'm aching to give away prizes, there will be a post soliciting Mina fanworks (and prompts for Mina fanworks), so that in February you can all vote on who I'll be spending money on.
But it will be the last Mina-as-usual update for quite a while.

...I miss you all already. ;_;

Footnotes:
1. Thank you, Edward Bulwer-Lytton.

2. It was Katharine Hepburn, playing Rose Sayer.

3. Speaking of Mina's new fandom: go watch this. Thanks to [personal profile] prettyh for drawing my attention to that.

4. Apologies to [personal profile] ankaret. I COULDN'T RESIST.

5. What's known as an in-joke, this is.

6. Such as, say, tossing the word "shemale" around because "that's the term used in the porn industry." To take a completely random example.

7. Fandom's two solitudes: those who want to squee, and those who want to have Important Discussions. Only not so solitude-y as all that, I suppose, since we all do both depending on mood. Still: I saw some interesting discussion around the whole "serious conversations are harshing my squee" thing recent-ish-ly, only I CAN'T REMEMBER WHERE. If anyone has links that sound pertinent, let me know and I'll thank you profusely and stick them in this footnote.

8. Trisha Hill stole her names from Patricia Gillikin, Patricia Lamb, and Matt Hills. And then she lost the 's' off of Hills, apparently.

9. On a more cheering note, I've seen actual publishers' guidelines that Just Say No to people being "coffee-coloured" and etc. So perhaps the era of food descriptors is fading away.

10. In the real world, as opposed to the Minaverse, female fans get portrayed negatively in Supernatural (which is a kind of real-world version of Occult, I've heard). It's discussed here, among other places--there are several good essays dealing with it, I've just linked to one of the ones I liked.

11. Ah, yes: the brain scientists. I can't even *begin* to pick one post to link you to, so I'm going to cheat and link you to just one of the excellent linkspam posts that will in turn give you links to follow. The entire Ogi-saga, aka SurveyFail, is so bizarrely compelling you may well lose days reading posts via linkspam. I know I did.
And speaking of SurveyFail, Ray's stockings were inspired by this brilliant (and NOT AT ALL SAFE FOR WORK) piece of protest art.

12. I know this isn't what most evolutionary psychologists argue. At all. I LIKE MY VERSION BETTER.

13. You know what makes for terrifying reading? Supernatural kinkfic, that's what. And fandom secrets even gets into it...

3.7 Mina de Malfois and the Burgeoning Tensions

[Goodness, season three is taking forever. My apologies. It's been a busy year. Dollporn, wedding planning, travel, and strange unexpected things have happened.

Anyway, because this is taking forever it is obviously not time for it to be Christmas or Chanukah in the Minaverse. So the closest I will come to a seasonally-appropriate update will be the Pierce and Jab fanfic which will follow this in the next day or two.

Unless I lose my mind altogether and write soppy holiday commentfic or one-shots, which will be completely out of chronological order and therefore non-numbered. Suggest suggestions for commentfic? When I'm dying of exhaustion doing nightshifts next week (LOL "holidays") it might give me something to do.]

3.6 Mina de Malfois and the Therapeutic Impulse (part three of three)

[It seems like a really long time since I've updated. I'd tell you what I've been doing in the meantime, but I'm not entirely sure you want to know. (Although your not wanting to know may not be enough to save you from being told anyway at some point.)

What's new with all of you?]

My limited bandwidth issues continue apace (part of the problem being that I have to download stuff I would otherwise be watching on television, so what bandwidth there is has been eaten by House MD and SPN and things). So once again: if I'm slow to respond to comments, I'm not ignoring you.

3.6 Mina de Malfois and the Therapeutic Impulse

Hi, all. Long time no update, I know. Mina's author's life is catching up to Mina's in terms of distracting weirdness and improbability.
Just a brief word of, uh, not 'explanation' as such, but possibly context. Ages ago, I mentioned, in an interview, Josh's origins being tied to a statue. (It's at the bottom of that page, the answer to the antepenultimate question). For anyone who's madly curious, the statue can be seen here.

3.5 Mina de Malfois and the Wizard’s Staff (part one)

[Originally, this was to have been yesterday's update, but I was late getting it done. Then I lied to my betas and told them I was posting it this Friday--my life: a web of deceit. This morning I remembered that for the next two days I'll be in an exhaustion-induced fugue state, and then on Saturday I'm off to spend a week with friends, so my chances to post (much less reply to comments) will shrink dramatically after tonight.

So: here it is. To get the intended impact you should time-travel back to yesterday and read it. Or read it on Friday.

Also--and there is no way to phrase this that doesn't make me sound like a giant dweeb, so just try to overlook it--you all know who I am, right? I mean, you know my non-Mina identity? Because it's not meant to be secret or anything; as much as I like it when people stumble across this without any idea where the hell it came from, any of you who want to know are welcome to.]

3.4 Mina de Malfois and the Underlying Issue

This has been extensively prodded by betas, and I hope it reads as "LOL Mina" and not "LOL racism." If it fails in that aim the fault is my own, much as I might like to blame someone else. Also, of course, a bit more of the backstory suggested in 1.13 emerges...

3.2 Mina de Malfois and the Staged Thrust (part two)

[This was to have been a Valentine's Day episode (I've often found it a depressing holiday, and hoped to cheer up any of you who might be feeling the same way). But I'm too limp with relief right now to delay any longer; one of Warr1or's real-life inspirations has "met" Warr1or, and with laughter rather than outrage. My admiration for gentlemen who can laugh at themselves is boundless.

Since I find myself blessedly unstrangled (one of these days, someone is probably going to, and I'll probably deserve it--but I'm glad it's not today): here, please accept this early Valentine--with one last subtle nod in the direction of the source of Warr1or's early ranting.]

3.3 Mina de Malfois and the Christmas Present

First of all, there's required reading over here: Fannish Climbing, or Politics and Pros. I've developed a major crush on Case, which is awkward, as he's fictional.

Secondly, the Cafe Press version of Season Two is now available.

Dedicated, for various and sundry reasons, to:
all of you, particularly any of you who need cheering up: THIS WILL BE OUR YEAR;
[livejournal.com profile] kalpurna and [livejournal.com profile] julietofarcadia: please accept these Bavarian sugar cookies;
[livejournal.com profile] bookshop, who was there--if by 'there' we count Facebook, and I THINK WE DO--while I was typing this up;
and most of all to the Clives: you know who you are. You're brilliant. I owe you.

3.1 Mina de Malfois and the Problem Images

Happiest of Solstices to you all!
Sorry to have been so long hibernating, but it was a very comfortable rest home. Even the walls were upholstered.
As a result of my having been away longer than I'd really intended, I'm about to dick around horribly with the posting order. This one's okay, but the next update will be 3.3, and then 3.2 will go up sometime after it.
This is a [belated, as of time of posting] birthday present for [livejournal.com profile] jackiejlh.

2.13 A Letter to Case

As promised, I'll be checking into that rest home now. Please do continue to email me, or I'll be all EMO and BEREFT and other capslocky things.

Also, Defying Convention, or Chapter House, the next installment of [livejournal.com profile] scifantasy's Case stories, is up. There are no words for how much I love seeing the Minaverse characters wandering around being written by other people; it's like having them come to life, only less creepy. Though I wouldn't, in point of fact, mind if Case sprung to life.

The fundraising print version of Season Two will be available soon--I'll edit in a link when it is. The at-cost print version will be available shortly thereafter. Oh, and the footnotes have been updated.

2.12 Mina de Malfois and the Significant Paralepsis

[Hello again. Those of you who pay particular attention to these things will have realized that we're nearing the end of 'season two.' To maintain symmetry with 'season one,' there will be a 2.13, but after that, as is customary, the author will be making an extended stay at a rest home taking a short rest. I'll still be online, and will be delighted to respond to emails or comments or what-have-you while I work up some outlines (usually jotted down in a kind of impromptu shorthand that, later on, will be incomprehensible even to me; I spend a lot of time staring at notes which read 'Have x tk to y abt cvlzn!' and wondering what the hell I was thinking of at the time of jotting.
This update is dedicated to [livejournal.com profile] notmonica. I'd also like to thank all those of you who are reading, most particularly those of you who've recognized yourselves or your friends in the Minaverse. You've all been terrifically good sports about it, and you're proof that fans can too laugh at ourselves.]
